We offer a wide range of services in neurology. The list below is intended to provide you with some initial information.
Doppler ultrasound can be used to examine blood flow in the blood vessels leading to the brain (extracranial Doppler ultrasound) and in the basilar vessels within the brain (transcranial Doppler ultrasound). This allows for the detection of abnormal blood flow patterns in the arteries. If the vessel wall is also visualised at the same time, this is referred to as duplex sonography (Doppler sonography and B-mode imaging). This allows for a very good assessment of changes in the vessel wall, such as calcifications, tears in the vessel wall and the degree of narrowing (stenosis). These examinations are painless. They are used to diagnose the causes of stroke. Ultrasound examinations of the blood vessels supplying the brain play a central role in stroke prevention. They are also used, for example, in the investigation of dizziness, headaches and memory problems.
Electroencephalography involves recording the electrical activity of the brain’s surface (brain waves). This painless and safe procedure enables diagnostic conclusions to be drawn regarding brain disorders, such as epileptic seizures, disturbances of consciousness and impairments of brain function. To do this, several electrodes are placed on the scalp and secured with a cap. The examination takes approximately 45 minutes. We recommend that you bring a hairbrush with you to the appointment.
Electromyography is used to examine electrical activity in the muscle. A fine needle is used to record and assess muscle activity both at rest and when the muscle is contracted. The test is used to diagnose various muscle and nerve disorders.
Electroneurography is used to examine peripheral nerves, particularly in the arms and legs. During the procedure, the nerve being examined is electrically stimulated at various points. A potential is then recorded from the corresponding muscle using surface electrodes. The nerve conduction velocity is calculated. The duration and amplitude of the potential are used for assessment. The examination is used, amongst other things, to diagnose paralysis and ‘nerve entrapments’ (entrapment syndromes, e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve entrapment syndrome).
When the sensory systems are stimulated, potentials can be evoked at various points in the nervous system.
VEP (Visual Evoked Potentials)
This test is used to assess the visual pathway. A moving chequerboard pattern on a monitor is used as the stimulus. A surface electrode is placed over the visual cortex. The potential is recorded, and the shape, amplitude and latency of the response are then measured. This test can be used to diagnose inflammation of the optic nerve.
FAEP (Early Acoustic Evoked Potentials)
This test examines the auditory pathway. The auditory nerve is stimulated via headphones using clicking sounds, and the responses from the individual sections of the auditory pathway are recorded from the surface of the head. The test is used to pinpoint the exact location of disorders affecting the auditory pathway
SEP (sensor-evoked potentials)
Nerve sonography is a high-resolution, non-invasive ultrasound technique used to directly visualise peripheral nerves. Its main indications include entrapment syndromes, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar sulcus syndrome. It complements electroneurography by providing morphological imaging.
Psychological testing involves standardised procedures used, for example, to diagnose memory disorders. These tests enable neuropsychological deficits to be assessed and compared. Examples of screening tests for dementia include the Mini-Mental State Examination, the DemTect, the clock-drawing test and the MOCA test.
